Nsikak Etim of Akwa-Ibom State emerged winner of the first MPC scrabble qualifier held in Sapele on May 26, 2018. The former African champion won 10 out of the 12 games played to seal the first slot at the MPC 2018 Grand Finale scheduled for November 10 – 11 at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, Lagos. The other qualifiers from the Sapele event are Oshevire Avwenagha, Wellington Jighere (World Scrabble Champion 2015), Dennis Ikekeregor, Ben Quickpen, Enoch Nwali, Eta Karo and Cyril umebiye.
The event was keenly contested as a few top players were on the ropes and needed to win their last game to finish in the top 8. Eta Karo, the number 1 player in the country had to win his last two games to make the list. Noticeably missing from the list is the current runner-up at the World Scrabble Championship, Moses Peter.
The star of the event was Enoch Nwali after finishing in sixth position. A young promising player who held his own against the elites in Nigerian scrabble circuit.
Many thanks to Neighbourhood Scrabble Club members for their support in ensuring a successful tournament and to all the players who participated in the event. The quality of the field was unquestionable in spite of the low turnout. We hope that more scrabble players will attend the remaining qualifiers to lend their support to the initiative.
The next MPC scrabble qualifier will be holding in Abuja on June 23rd of next month in partnership with Central Scrabble Club, Abuja.
